While traveling the black maze with its dark blue walls, Pac-Man’s gobbling of the dots emits a distinct sound. ![]() While looking a little strange on the arcade marquee by having legs and eyes when in-game he was featureless beyond his mouth, Pac-Man is the player character and one with a few more distinct traits to him. Easily recognizable as a mouth, especially as it flaps open and shut to gobble up the pellets in the maze he inhabits, Pac-Man’s elegant simplicity made him recognizable wherever he cropped up, and after the breakaway success of his arcade maze game debut, he would go on to get a hit song, a cartoon, and a spot as an important part of the 80s cultural identity in the U.S.A. Despite his name Pac-Man was not a human but a circular yellow figure with the now iconic shape that resembles a pizza with a single slice removed. Rather than just being a game starring shapes moving on a screen, Namco’s Pac-Man introduced to the world to a character who was distinct, who originated in video games rather than being some borrowed face from another medium, and he represented the wonderful whimsy and world of fantasy that video games could offer. While passing through ghosts using the drift mechanic might not be the best strategy for avoiding them, it’s at least a good idea to drift around all the corners, just in case you accidentally run into a ghost.Video games had been slowly finding their footing during the 1970s, but it was 1980 that would give the burgeoning medium a face. This might be a useful strategy if you’re trying to kill the Red Jammers but can’t get to the right spot in time. There are also rumors going around that using the drift can let you dodge Red Jammer PAC-MAN units. ![]() If the ghost is too far from the corner you will simply connect with the ghost as normal, killing PAC-MAN. The challenging part, then, is ensuring that the ghost is in the correct spot. It's good to drift around each corner in case you accidentally lose track of a ghost and slam into it. Drifting around corners shows a little sparking animation. As you approach a turn, begin holding the direction you want to go, and as you go around the corner, you will see little lines come off of PAC-MAN – this indicates you have successfully drifted. You can see this drifting effect in action even if there are no ghosts nearby. If a ghost was on the corner or close by, you will “drift” through the ghost, bypassing the damage it would have dealt to PAC-MAN. ![]() ![]() To do this, you must hold the direction before a turn. How to pass through or dodge ghosts If done correctly, you will see a flash around PAC-MAN and you won't die after passing through a ghost.Īn interesting mechanic in PAC-MAN 99 is the ability to pass through ghosts by dodging them. However, there is a way to pass through ghosts in PAC-MAN 99, and it’s all thanks to a helpful mechanic that can be easy to miss if you don’t know how to do it. These things will either kill PAC-MAN as soon as he touches them, or if he’s eaten a Power Pellet, will be killed and returned to ghost jail. Unlike ghosts in real life, ghosts in PAC-MAN 99 cannot be walked through.
